Broward County, the second most populous county in Florida, is home to over 1,784,000 residents. Broward’s largest cities include Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs, and Hollywood.
Broward is known for its beautiful beaches, spring break and tourism – Fort Lauderdale Beach and Port Everglades for cruises. It is also home to the Museum of Discovery & Science, the International Swimming Hall of Fame, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, the shopping outlet Sawgrass Mills, the Everglades National Park, Riverwalk and Las Olas. Not to mention the BB&T Center where the NHL’s Florida Panthers play.
Broward County is located among major thoroughfares such as the Ronald Reagan Turnpike and Homestead Extension, I-75, I595 (Port Everglades Expressway) and State Road 869 (Sawgrass Expressway) and is home to the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Tri-rail and Amtrak also run though Broward and is home to Port Everglades.
Being a major tourist destination and being located near such major thoroughfares also leads to car crashes and road traffic accidents. In 2010, according to Florida’s Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Broward County experienced 26,233 car crashes. Of those 1,424 were alcohol-related crashes. More than 20,500 were injured and 179 individuals lost their lives on Broward County roadways. In addition, there were 12,505 vehicle and/or property damage claims as a result of these car and truck crashes.
In 2015, Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System (FIRES) reported that Broward County had 186 fatalities and 23,474 injuries involving 38,384 vehicle crashes. FIRES shows that for the first two months of 2016, there have been 5,263 crashes with 3,260 injuries and 19 fatalities. There have been 555 commercial vehicle crashes and 3,098 property damage crashes. Distracted drivers may be the reason for the significant increase in accidents. It is important to drive safely and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not text or read emails while driving. This can be the difference between Life and Death.
